Government of Kenya to Extend Standard Gauge Railway SGR from Naivasha to Kisumu

EAT Reporter 13/3/25: The Government of Kenya plans to extend the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to Kisumu have kicked off after the Kenya Railways successfully delineated and marked the Phase 2B alignment route, covering approximately 262 kilometers, running through Narok, Bomet, Kericho and Kisumu Counties.

According to the Extension plan, SGR route will not follow the old one, and Kenya Railways have already commissioned a study with the aim of assisting those who shall be displaced. The recommendations shall be included in the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP).

To harness the Lake Victoria transport hub, SGR Extension proposes new 8km route that encompasses the construction of a new lake port in Kisumu, complete with two multipurpose berths and work boat berth to accommodate safe lying of ships.
