Kenyan University students have raised the national flag much higher at the global stage after winning several awards during this year’s HUAWEI Global ICT Competition. The much anticipated annual competition attracted 210,000 students from over 2000 Universities in 100 countries, globally.
Kenya floored several countries to emerge winners in several categories as listed hereunder:-
1. First Prize— Computing category. The multitalented team which comprised of Comrades Esther Guichaiya from JKUAT, Ephraim Shikanga from JKUAT, Mark Omaiko and Ian Omwenga both from Machakos University lifted our spirits even higher after commanding the global stage with their intellect.
2. Second Prize— Cloud category. The all girl vibrant team, comprised of Ifrah Hussein from Moi University, Banzy from JKUAT and Beverly Ndombi from Moi University.
3. Second Prize— Network category. The award winning team is made of Rukia Mwari Mohammed from JKUAT, Brian Kipkoech from Machakos University and Odanga Clemet from University fo Nairobi.
4. Third Prize— Innovation category. The ambitious team consists of Patricia Gitonga (Instructor) University of Nairobi, Karimi Muriithi, Denis Syengo and Peterson kariuki all from Egerton University.
The global Huawei ICT Competition is open to students in higher education institutions around the world that partner with the Universities.
In his opening remarks, Ritchie Peng, Director of Huawei’s ICT Strategy & Business Development Department, emphasized the competition’s role in promoting practical learning and innovation.
“The Practice Competition aligns with our vision for an Intelligent World 2030. It empowers students with skills in cloud computing, big data, and AI, and challenges them to solve real-world problems in agriculture, healthcare, and education,” he said.
Kenya’s PS for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy, Fikirini Kahindi, praised the students’ performance, saying their success showcased the country’s potential to develop world-class digital talent.
“The People and the government of Kenya would like to thank HUAWEI for the opportunity to offer Kenya’s university student with this much needed exposure to face the future which is Artificial Intelligence AI well prepared” Said Fikirini.
The PS also give thumbs up for TEAM Kenya (Lecturers and students) for the resounding victory “As we explore and nurture the expertise for the betterment of our beloved country. More grace to you, Comrades and friends” Said Fikirini.
