Mtwara Gas to Power Industrial take off in East and Southern Africa

Aqua Power, a Company founded by a Kenyan, Dr. Gachao Kiuna in 2016 built a 45Maw power plant to support Dangote Cement Tanzania Limited in 2017 to avoid Dangote shutting down the cement manufacturing in Mtwara due to lack of power. Dangote were forced to use diesel power as an interim solution which was unaffordable.

Aqua Power is now looking to expand the power plant from 45MW to 300MW in order to sell power to Northern Mozambique 🇲🇿 (only 90km away) to help Mozambique to also manage their power crisis and move away from expensive diesel and Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO). Aqua Power can help Kenya achieve the same shift from HFO to gas and save billions of shillings on fuel costs for power generation based on what was already achieved for Dangote.

According to the founding Chief Executive of Aqua Power Dr.Gachao Kiuna ,This project which is being dubbed a Pan Africa investment is a great initiative between Kenya (Investor and Off-Taker), Tanzania (Project Country) and Mozambique (Off-Taker). It’s a win win for the economic development of all three countries.

“We are the only Kenyan Company right in the Epicenter of this boom. We are at the first gas off take point in Tanzania (it’s called Block Valve Station Number One or BVS1) and 90km away from the USD 20 billion Project in Afungi at the Mozambique and Tanzania border” Says Dr Gachao Kiuna . Dr.Gachao added that Kenya needs to push this agenda with Tanzania and Mozambique.

” We can’t afford to miss out on this These are the largest private sector investments that Africa has ever seen” adding that the power project which came into operation to stop Dangote from relocating from Tanzania has been projected to be Ten times bigger than the SGR in Kenya.
