High Level Public-Private Partnership Holds Symposium in Nairobi
The PPP Directorate of Kenya under the Ministry of Finance and National Treasury has today organised a high level symposium that brought together Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, industry leaders, financiers, and global investors to set a clear direction for Kenya’s infrastructure and development agenda.
According to the Director General of the PPP Directorate Eng.Kefa Seda, This high-level engagement translated national priorities into well-structured projects that deliver measurable impact, maximise value for money, and accelerate socio-economic progress.
Speaking while officially opening the meet,Treasury Cabinet Secretary Hon. John Mbadi said the goverment of Kenya is committed to structuring partnerships that attract sustainable private capital, deploy innovative financing and delivery models, and guarantee efficient, timely, and quality infrastructure rollout. Beyond physical assets.
“these PPP initiatives will stimulate enterprise, create jobs, strengthen service delivery, and enhance Kenya’s global competitiveness, ensuring every investment directly contributes to long-term development, fiscal prudence, and improved quality of life for all citizens” Said CS Mbadi.
The Cabinet Secretary added that ” PPPs are Kenya’s Sustainable Path to Closing the Ksh 336B Infrastructure Gap.“Kenya is open for business. With the right partnerships, we can build the roads, housing, hospitals,and digital networks our people deserve ,without overburdening public debt,” he said at the PPP Symposium today.
According to the CS,Eight PPP projects are already under implementation in roads, housing, and energy, delivering tangible benefits. The CS also unveiled new opportunities: 2,820 affordable housing units plus 200 market-rate units in Athi River; a 3,000-capacity tuition facility with 800-student accommodation at Moi Teaching & Referral Hospital in Eldoret; 4,000-bed student hostels at the University of Nairobi; and a 2,000-bed hospital at Pwani Teaching & Referral Hospital in Kilifi. He urged full Kenyan participation, noting the capacity to finance, build, operate and maintain these projects using local resources.
” Kenya has had Sucesfully PPPs all along with natable PPPs being the Uhuru Expressway and most recently the much acclaimed Galana Kulalu irrigation project which was recently inspected by the Principal Secretaries of Finance and Irrigation” Said CS Mbadi.
Speaking during the High Level Symposium the Permanent Secretary for State department of Irrigation in Kenya Mr Ephantus Kimotho sadi that through PPP the Ministry remains committed to pursuing alternative sources of financing to bridge the funding gaps in the National Water Sanitation Investment Plan (NAWASIP) and the National Irrigation Sector Investment Plan (NISIP). “several Public-Private Partnership projects are at various stages of processing through the PPP Committee, with notable ones at advanced stages including the Sabaki Water Supply Project, the Galana Kulalu Food Security Project, the Lamu Desalination Project, and the Londiani Dam” Said PS
On its cote mandate of preservation of wwter through dams the PS said “enabling the delivery of safe and reliable water for domestic, industrial use, and ensuring food security through expanded irrigation”.
