The Caucus of Patient-led Organizations under the Non-Communicable Disease Alliance Kenya (NCD Alliance Kenya) has issued an urgent appeal to both the Government of Kenya, County government and the Doctors Union, Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacist and Dentists Union (KMPDU) to resolve the ongoing doctors strike, which has disrupted healthcare services for over 6 weeks which has lead to untold pain and anguish of ordinary Kenyans.
“The continuation of the strike poses a grave danger mainly to those with existing conditions such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease,hypertension,cancer,and other cardiovascular diseases commonly referred as Non Communicable diseases” Said John Gikonyo Board Vice Chairman at NCD Alliance Kenya.
The Vice Chair added that due to this strike patient care such as Chemotherapy, dialysis which must be under constant supervision is greatly impaired.
Evans Majau a patient living with hypertension said it is very crucial that both parties come to the negotiating table with willingness to find a middle ground for a quick solution to be found.
According to the Executive Director at NDC Alliance Kenya, Dr.Cathrine Karekezi since this strike has compromised healthcare with devastating effects across the nation, an example is two children lost their lives in Isiolo and Kitengela due to complication in diabetes.
